The erratic floods experienced in rain-fed and floodaffected areas are usually caused by heavy rainfall, overflow of nearby rivers and canals or sometimes tidal movements as in coastal areas. These floods cause serious problems for rice and other crops and in some cases, the topography of the land prevents fast water movement to drain flooded fields. Flooding is therefore considered a major challenge for rice production in South and Southeast Asia, where the majority of the world’s rice farmers live.

The RRB Greenhouse can also be constructed on roof top of buildings/Labs in places of land scarcity or the fields being too far off. With the technology available now Saveer has made it possible to haveroof top greenhouses which are more environmentally friendly and very easy for the researcher to access the facility from his laboratory for efficient monitoring of the research projects.

Suitable Climate

Rice being a tropical and sub-tropical plant requires a fairly high temperature, ranging from 20° to 40°C. In India, rice is grown under widely varying conditions of altitude and climate. Rice cultivation in India extends from 8 to 350 N altitudes and from sea level to as high as 3000 meters. Rice crop needs a hot and humid climate. It is best suited to regions which have high humidity, prolonged sunshine and an assured supply of water. As per the requirement of the researcher, the desired conditions for growing rice can be created.


Rice is grown where the average temperature during the growing season is between 20°C and 27°C. Abundant sunshine is essential during its four months of growth. The minimum temperature should not go below 15°C as germination cannot take place below that temperature. Similar parameters can be created inside the RRB Greenhouse by environment control system as per your research need round the year.


Moist humid weather during vegetative growth and dry-sunny weather during ripening is most desirable. A relative humidity of 60-80 % is said to be optimum.The required conditions can be mimic in RRB Greenhouse by environment control system as per the requirement.


Sunlight is a must for all plant lives, a source of energy. During the ripening period of last 35 to 45 days, the yield is most benefited by sunlight. Bright sunshine with low temperature during ripening period of the crop helps in the development of carbohydrates in the grains. The adjustable Light Banks to simulate light to match the research requirements inside the greenhouse has been developed by us.  The duration of the days i.e. long or short can be controlled through VWS-18 technology by which the different DLI i.e. differential light integrals can be achieved for the experimental requirements.


Paddy requires more water than any other crop .The crop requires about 1400 to 1800 mm water. If this much rain occurs during crop season with well distribution is sufficient for cropand there should be no rainfall at the ripening stage. The RRB greenhouse is equipped with AR technology that can give the required amount of water in the form of rain droplets as per the researcher requirement.

Wind velocity

High wind velocity or storm is not desirable, as it cause lodging or shattering depending upon the crop growth stage. Gentle wind is the best for rice cultivation because the supply of carbon di-oxide (CO2) and its utilization is regulated to the maximum. The same conditions can be created inside the RRB greenhouse with CO2releasing systems.

Solar radiation

Clear sunny weather during ripening and moist-humid during vegetative phase is desirable for rice crop. Low solar radiation would hamper ripening of grains and would increase chaff production enormously. The required intensity of light can be provided at any time as per crop cycle and required duration for year around growing of the crop.

Sunshine hours

Rice crop prefers brighter and prolonged sunshine for enhanced photosynthetic activity and higher yield. So, it should receive more than 300 sunshine hours during the last 45 days before harvest. The required conditions can be provided with the equipped VWR technology inside the Greenhouse.

Water quality: pH and E.C

Slightly acid soils having a pH value of 6 to 7 are better for paddy cultivation. However, it has been found to be grown in a wide range of pH varying from 4 to 8.  The required pH and EC can be provided automatically by feeding the data in the attached computerized system and get data in numerical or graphical form.

Water management

Flat fields having smooth surface are better for rice cultivation as it facilitates even and equal distribution of water. The irrigation or water management you can topographicaldesign and can be provided automatically after feeding the data as per the requirement in the computerized system.

Soil and Land

Rice is grown well on the alluvial soil or on the fertile river basins. It is also grown in mixed soil or loamy and clayey soil. Plain lands or gentle slopes are suitable for the production of rice because stagnancy of water is a must for the cultivation of rice. The required slopes can be designed for different beds as per the researcher requirement.

Time of sowing

As favourable environment is created in RRB greenhouse for Rice as such researcher can grow the crop any time during the year for continuation of the studies year around.

Nutrient management

Paddy requires three essential plant nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Most paddy lands have a moderate quantity of such nutrients, but if they are deficient, organic manure or artificial fertilizers have to be used. According toagronomical trials for nutrient doze and timing vis a vis stage of the crop, different studies can be conducted with facility of complete isolation of the plots within the greenhouse. 

IPM Studies

Studies for working out IPM strategies with respect of insect pests and disease on rice, isolated chambers in RRB greenhouse can be provided to the researchers to carry out such studies.


Harvesting is the process of collecting the mature rice crop from the field. Paddy harvesting activities include cutting, stacking, handling, threshing, cleaning, and hauling. These can be done individually or a combine harvester can be used to perform the operations simultaneously. The required device and process within the greenhouse can be provided as per the requirement.
